- The town offers a variety of interesting activities that can be enjoyed during the colder months.

7 Winter Activities in Saint-Malo
1. Skate at the Ice Rink
For those who enjoy ice-skating, Saint-Malo sets up an ice rink on the Esplanade Saint-Vincent in front of the main entrance of the old town every year. The rink isn’t very big, so it’s best for children, but it’s still a fun activity.
It is usually open from the last week of November up to January 2nd. Last year, the entrance fees were €8 for adults and €6 for children.
2. Experience the Advent Windows in Saint-Malo
Saint-Malo presents a life-size Advent calendar concept. From December 1st to 24th, each evening at 6pm, a local shopkeeper unveils a surprise in their window display. Whether it’s a story, special music, or even a tasting, these surprises will delight both kids and adults alike.
I believe it always starts at the office du tourisme on December 1st at 6pm.
3. Stroll Through the Christmas Market
If you visit Saint-Malo in December (or early January), you will have the opportunity to see a small Christmas market. Although it may not compare to the markets in cities like Strasbourg or Colmar, Saint-Malo’s market is very neat.
This Christmast market offers pleasant booths with various goods, including sausages, cheeses, jewelry, scarves, and soaps. Don’t worry, there are crêpes and hot wine stands as well! But, quite strangely, you won’t see that many local products at display.
The market runs usually from December 2nd to 31st (but you might still get lucky at the very beginning of January, depending on the year).
5. Explore the Micro Zoo
For those who prefer to stay within the old town, there’s the Micro Zoo. Located about 300 meters away from the office de tourisme, it is located within the ramparts of Saint-Malo. It’s a quite new activity in Saint-Malo, as the Micro Zoo opened in 2020 within the walls of Saint-Malo, adding extra charm!
You’ll find miniature animals like frogs, tiny crocodiles, and ants. A visit to the Micro Zoo takes about an hour, making it a delightful short excursion.
4. Visit the Aquarium
A visit to the Grand Aquarium of Saint-Malo is an excellent indoor activity during the cold season. Located about ten minutes from the old town (by car), you can easily reach it by bus if you don’t have a car.
In addition to exploring the various tanks, you can take a submarine tour and participate at two attractions. There is a wide variety of fishes to see and plenty of pictures to take. Usually, the aquarium is not so crowded in the winter time. It’s definitely a place to visit with children (they are usually delighted). It usually takes about 2 hours to visit the aquarium.
6. Hike by the sea and then warm up in a café
My girlfriend and I like to walk on the paths along the sea. We never get bored seeing these superb landscapes and the fresh air is good for us (even when it’s cold). I’ll post hiking ideas when I find time.
What we also like during the winter is to go to a café after our hike. It’s nice to have a hot drink in a friendly environment after walking in the cold.
7. Go Shopping
After your hike you can also go shopping. By the way, did you know that shops in old-town Saint-Malo are open seven days a week? It’s a great advantage for wandering the streets of Saint-Malo while staying warm indoors. Explore shops; you may find a striped sailor sweater as a souvenir from your trip to Saint-Malo.
The main street, Rue Saint-Vincent, offers well-known brands, but don’t hesitate to explore the smaller streets for unique finds. Besides, during winter, Saint-Malo is beautifully lit, and the shops create a festive atmosphere. If you happen to leave the old town, check out the Saint-Servan neighborhood for more shopping options!
These activities will make your winter visit to Saint-Malo delightful, and contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t always rain in Brittany! Don’t hesitate to check out my article on the 20 things to do in Saint-Malo for even more ideas!
